Build a Bowl

Every dog is special. But it’s not just their personality. Every dog has unique nutrition needs based on their breed, size, shape, activity level and many other factors. The best way to help your dog be the best version of themselves is to build a healthy, balanced bowl that’s a combination of grains, vegetables, proteins, hydrators and supplements that are specific to your pet.

When you build a bowl here at Volhard, you will start with the choice of foundation mix. For better planning, it’s helpful to think about the dog you plan to feed and their issues first. This is where you can determine the "personality" of your bowl.

Build-a-Bowl is a fun way to find out what the nutritional value is in a bowl of Volhard! Then you will be asked to add a protein for a delectable super-powered meal for your dog!

Feeding Directions:

Prepare your dog’s bowl in three easy steps:

1.  Mix Rescue with fresh protein (we suggest 80/20 ground beef raw or lightly cooked) and water as directed.
2.  Let the base mix rehydrate (about 5 minutes).
3.  Serve your dog a bowl with fresh and hydrating nutrition!

Daily Feeding Recommendations (Cups per Day):

Each dog is an individual with varying metabolisms and activity levels. The amounts suggested are only guidelines.  Divide the following daily guidelines in half for feeding twice per day.

Puppy Feeding Guildelines

Daily Feeding Recommendations (Cups per Day):

WEIGH YOUR PUPPY WEEKLY AND ADJUST THE FOOD ACCORDING TO THE NEW WEIGHT

RESCUE can be stored unopened in a cool dry place for up to 1 year. After opening,

RESCUE must be stored in the fridge or freezer and is good for 6 months after opening.

The Transition

Add a small amount of RESCUE and protein to the current diet you are feeding your dog now and mix with water. As the week progresses, gradually increase the amount of Rescue, protein, and water, at the same time decreasing the current diet by a corresponding amount, until you have phased out the current diet. (If you are feeding the same protein for six days, you may want to feed another protein - canned mackerel or cottage cheese - on the seventh day.) At the end of the transition period, weigh your dog. Weigh them again after four weeks. Increase or decrease the amount you feed accordingly.

Recommended Protein: 80/20 beef.

    Rescue Diet

Posted by Linda Willetts on Apr 6th 2021

In August of 2020 my good friend went into the hospital, and I took over the care of her 9.5 years old Lhasa Apso. He had horrible allergies, that are environmental and probably food related as well. He had been living on a cocktail of antibiotics and medicated shampoos. Our vet recommended the usual prescription commercial diets. There was no way I could rationalize feeding that. Having fed the original Volhard diet, since 1990, I remembered that there were new formulas that were developed. I checked the website and found the Rescue diet and ordered it. I have to grind it down a bit more since he has some digestive issues with the fruits and veggies but otherwise he is doing very well on it and his energy level and personality have changed dramatically. His coat is coming back in and he has become more engaged with curiosity. When he came here he had a very flat personality and couldn’t have cared less about anything. He will probably always have skin issues since these have been his life for a very long time. But I am encouraged, he is brighter and more interested in the world around him. I’m just sorry that I didn’t change him back in August when I got him. Great food!!!!!!! 10 STARS!!!!!

    Rescue Diet

We have switched our 10 yr old Yorkie with Protein Losing Enteropathy to Rescue Diet from Hills Pres Z/D. We are adding cooked 90/10 beef with the meal instead of the raw beef but she is thriving on it and LOVES to eat it. ( I was running out of ideas to get her to eat the Hills Z/D.) Volhard's Nutritionist worked with us to determine we needed to use cooked meat instead of raw, due to her condition. They were very helpful. The reason I knew about Volhard Foods is because I used it back in the mid 90's for my Weimaraner who had explosive Diarrhea due to an allergy/sensitivity to the preservatives in commercial dog food. We could not have kept him alive if not for Volhard's Porridge and meal for raw meat (the prescription the Vet had him on was starting not to work for the Diarrhea.

My picky dogs seem to like this blend much better than the am/pm which I have used for my dog for the past 15 years. Even the puppy likes it.

    Rescue Diet

My dog LOVES the Rescue Diet! I have been feeding her a Volhard diet for about 6 months now and she recently had repeat blood work that showed a complete NORMAL result of her liver and kidney functions! Prior to trying this diet she had very high levels and was very sick. I would recommend this diet!

I have been using this for my dog for over a year now and love it. It has helped with so much of his allergies and his energy level. The only thing that I am not seeing is a reduction in his shedding but overall, he is amazingly healthy! Thank you.

    Rescue Diet

Posted by Wendy Kailas on Oct 8th 2020

I have an almost 6 month old king charles cavalier spaniel named Bennie. He had several months where he was experiencing on and off diarrhea episodes along with bouts of itchiness. I wanted to find a diet that would not only agree with him but also provide him with optimum nutrition. My vet had recommended one of the prescription diets, but I could not in good conscience - feed him a diet with such an abysmal ingredient list. A close friend who is also a long time breeder of GSDs - recommended I consider the Wendy Volhard diets. With the help of Jennifer Carter - I ended up getting Rescue - and slowly transitioned Bennie to this diet. He is doing beautifully, enjoying every meal - and along with full recovery from the diarrhea - I am no longer seeing bouts of itchiness. As a side benefit, I personally learned a lot about canine nutrition, as Jennifer Carter patiently explained the function of each ingredient in Rescue and also explained why certain ingredients are NOT in Rescue. My plan is to continue with Rescue for a while - and then transition to NDF2. In any event, I will be sticking with one of the Volhard diets.

We have only been using the Rescue Diet for a short time and my German Shepherd is already showing signs of improvement in terms of allergies, and less shedding. His coat has darkened and, although it was shiny, it is now very glossy. So far, so good with him. Our shepherd loves it and we appear to be having good results with him.
