ENDURANCE is a unique supplement formulated for dogs or cats that are fed commercial kibble or canned food. Both can experience allergies, skin problems, constant shedding, bad breath, chronic ear discharges and digestive upsets. These conditions are typical of nutritional deficiencies. Endurance is the food supplement to overcome these manifestations of a nutritional imbalance.
I developed Endurance several years ago after I was invited to talk about canine nutrition at an annual regional conference of K-9 corps police officers. All the dogs were fed various brands of commercial kibble pet food and the main complaints were the same – difficulty dealing with stress (diarrhea), falling asleep in the squad car during 10-hour shifts (a real problem), and excessive shedding. Since the respective police departments paid for the dogs’ food, there was no way to get the officers to change to a better diet and I had to come up with something they could and would use.
A year later, I was invited again and presented them with Endurance. The officers, who tried it, reported an immediate improvement in their dogs after only 48 hours and continued to use it. One officer was particularly elated – apparently his captain had been continuously on his case about the dog hair in the squad car. After several weeks on Endurance, no more dog hair in the car and no more captain on his case. Best of all, his dog was alert during shifts.
After my success with these dogs, I realized that the application of this dog food supplement was so wide, that I added Endurance to VDN products. During the course of my clinical trials of Endurance, my cats wanted to eat it too, so I sprinkled a little on their food. They loved it.

Is Cod Liver Oil the same as Fish Oil?
While cod is certainly a fish, these two oils are not the same. Fish oil includes cod, but that’s not the only kind of fish. It comes from the flesh of tuna, herring, cod and other oily fish species found in the deep sea. They both have a similar fatty acid profile, being rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as EPA and DHA. However, Cod Liver Oil contains more vitamin A and D, and so is a better choice than fish oil.
Does my dog need nutritional supplements?
If your dog has no problems with skin, coat, teeth, diarrhea, or concentration, has a great immune system, and is already eating natural dog food, then it’s possible your dog’s diet is just fine as is. Unfortunately, kibble or canned food is unlikely to provide the healthy vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids that promote health.
Where does a raw diet come in?
A properly administered raw diet can be a live saver for your dog. If you are ready to move away from commercial dog food, read more in our article Raw Diet for Dogs: Just As Nature Intended.
Should I make my own homemade dog food?
Many people like to make their own. If you have the time to research and prepare natural dog food, then you may be successful in feeding your dogs and cats a balanced and nutritious diet. Homemade diets are not as easy as they might sound, and you need to be vigilant to ensure to include the proper mix of vitamins and minerals. Whether you have a puppy, adult dogs, or a senior dog, they have different needs than eating people foods. Click here for Wendy Volhard’s Natural Diet copyright 1984
