Build a Bowl

Every dog is special. But it’s not just their personality. Every dog has unique nutrition needs based on their breed, size, shape, activity level and many other factors. The best way to help your dog be the best version of themselves is to build a healthy, balanced bowl that’s a combination of grains, vegetables, proteins, hydrators and supplements that are specific to your pet.

When you build a bowl here at Volhard, you will start with the choice of foundation mix. For better planning, it’s helpful to think about the dog you plan to feed and their issues first. This is where you can determine the "personality" of your bowl.

Build-a-Bowl is a fun way to find out what the nutritional value is in a bowl of Volhard! Then you will be asked to add a protein for a delectable super-powered meal for your dog!

Feeding Directions:

Prepare your dog’s bowl in three easy steps:

1.  Mix Rescue with fresh protein (we suggest 80/20 ground beef raw or lightly cooked) and water as directed.
2.  Let the base mix rehydrate (about 5 minutes).
3.  Serve your dog a bowl with fresh and hydrating nutrition!

Daily Feeding Recommendations (Cups per Day):

Each dog is an individual with varying metabolisms and activity levels. The amounts suggested are only guidelines.  Divide the following daily guidelines in half for feeding twice per day.

Puppy Feeding Guildelines

WEIGH YOUR PUPPY WEEKLY AND ADJUST THE FOOD ACCORDING TO THE NEW WEIGHT

RESCUE can be stored unopened in a cool dry place for up to 1 year. After opening,

RESCUE must be stored in the fridge or freezer and is good for 6 months after opening.

The Transition

Add a small amount of RESCUE and protein to the current diet you are feeding your dog now and mix with water. As the week progresses, gradually increase the amount of Rescue, protein, and water, at the same time decreasing the current diet by a corresponding amount, until you have phased out the current diet. (If you are feeding the same protein for six days, you may want to feed another protein - canned mackerel or cottage cheese - on the seventh day.) At the end of the transition period, weigh your dog. Weigh them again after four weeks. Increase or decrease the amount you feed accordingly.

Recommended Protein: 80/20 beef.

    Rescue Diet

Switched my newly rescued lab mix to this because she was licking her paws and, within a few days, the paw licking had stopped. Amazing! My other two dogs have been eating the NDF2 diet for several years now and thriving on it. They both have zero health issues, and my newest retriever girl is on her way to zero health issues. Thank you for making such a high quality product.

    Game Changer!

Posted by Jen, Hank's Mom on Nov 19th 2025

What a game changer! For context, my 3-year-old intact male Chocolate Lab, Hank, doesn’t have any known food allergies, but Volhard’s Rescue Diet has still been an excellent choice for him. The dehydrated, grain-free base mix lets me add and rotate proteins easily, and it’s been gentle on his digestion while supporting his overall health, and the company’s customer service is responsive, easy to work with, and consistently gets orders shipped on time.

    Volhard Rescue

I started this on my 4 mos old puppy after she couldn't stop itching and scratching. Aimee, from Chalk Pond, had talked about how great this product was. I was nervous it was going to be too "complicated" but gave it a go. IT was the best thing I have done for my girl. She is now 14 mos old, doesn't itch crazily, and is happy and healthy. Highly recommend!

    Rescue Diet

My 2 year old lab is very picky with food and has a sensitive tummy. After 2 weeks of Rescue, her tummy seems great, her stools consistent and she seems to have more energy. Very thankful for that.

    Rescue Diet

I cannot recommend Volhard Rescue Diet more wholeheartedly! I have six rescue dogs, ranging from a 16.5-year-old Border Collie to a 3-year-old JRT cross and a couple of Chihuahuas. They are all fed exclusively the Rescue diet. We grind our own bone in chicken quarters or purchase 80/20 ground beef to mix with. We have no issues with worms, fleas, or other health problems. Their stools are amazing. The younger ones have been on it since weaning, and my 16.5-year-old Border Collie has been on it for about half his life. I occasionally run a blood panel on one or more just to be sure, and every time, they all come back with perfect results. My vets marvel at how healthy all of my dogs are. As long as the Rescue diet exists, I will never feed my dogs anything else!
