Build a Bowl

Every dog is special. But it’s not just their personality. Every dog has unique nutrition needs based on their breed, size, shape, activity level and many other factors. The best way to help your dog be the best version of themselves is to build a healthy, balanced bowl that’s a combination of grains, vegetables, proteins, hydrators and supplements that are specific to your pet.

When you build a bowl here at Volhard, you will start with the choice of foundation mix. For better planning, it’s helpful to think about the dog you plan to feed and their issues first. This is where you can determine the "personality" of your bowl.

Build-a-Bowl is a fun way to find out what the nutritional value is in a bowl of Volhard! Then you will be asked to add a protein for a delectable super-powered meal for your dog!

Feeding Directions:

Prepare your dog’s bowl in three easy steps:

1.   Mix NDF2 Beef with fresh protein (we suggest 80/20 ground beef raw or lightly cooked) and water as directed.

2.  Let the base mix rehydrate (about 5 minutes).
3.  Serve your dog a bowl with fresh and hydrating nutrition!

Daily Feeding Recommendations (Cups per Day):

Each dog is an individual with varying metabolisms and activity levels. The amounts suggested are only guidelines.  Divide the following daily guidelines in half for feeding twice per day.

Puppy Feeding Guidelines

Daily Feeding Recommendations (Cups per Day):

Each dog is an individual with varying metabolisms and activity levels. The amounts suggested are only guidelines.  Divide the following daily guidelines by four for feeding four times per day (recommended for puppies until teething is completed).

WEIGH YOUR PUPPY WEEKLY AND ADJUST THE FOOD ACCORDING TO THE NEW WEIGHT

NDF2 can be stored unopened in a cool dry place for up to 1 year. After opening,

NDF2 must be stored in the fridge or freezer and is good for 6 months after opening.

The Transition

Add a small amount of NDF2 and protein to the current diet you are feeding your dog now and mix with water. As the week progresses, gradually increase the amount of NDF2, protein, and water, at the same time decreasing the current diet by a corresponding amount, until you have phased out the current diet. (If you are feeding the same protein for six days, you may want to feed another protein - canned mackerel or cottage cheese - on the seventh day.) At the end of the transition period, weigh your dog. Weigh them again after four weeks. Increase or decrease the amount you feed accordingly.

Recommended Protein: 80/20 beef.

    NDF 2

I have grown multiple generations of Landseer Newfoundlands on Volhard Natural Diet...but it was making and mixing my own ingredients, so raising my next puppy on this mix has been so simple ! Sommer is a Cavalier King Charles, so I was happy to let the mixing fall to someone else. She loves it ( I have been told that Cavs are picky) and while we have had days when she eats less than "the plan" would dictate, she is happy to eat it up ! I find that some days she likes it cooked a bit ( so it is more like a meatball), but that is easy for me to do....

    helped with liver levels

Posted by Mike H on Aug 7th 2021

Grady is a 14 year old 20 lb poodle/westie mix and the most handsome little guy you have ever seen! Shelter dog that we adopted when he was 6 and from day one was not a good eater. Over the years we tried everything and he either itched or had soft runny stools or didn't like the food. Always an issue but we tried various foods over the years but nothing ever worked really great. Eventually he really started to slow down - thought he was really on the way out, and was not eating at all...I mean thought he would starve to death - and during routine blood work before a teeth cleaning his ALP (one of the liver enzymes) level was over 1100, up from about 600 the year before. Was actually having seizures. Normal range is up to 212. He was tested for cushings the previous year becasuse 600 was so high but it came back negative. Vet put him on Denarmarin and and we researched foods and spoke to Volhard nutritionist Jen who spent a lot of time with us and gave great input. Ended putting him on NDF2 and after 6 weeks his levels came down to the 600 range again. Not sure if it was the NDF or the Denamarin, but the combination worked great. Best of all, he loved the food! eats it with no problem. We started with ground turkey (cooked, not raw) and will shift to or add chicken or fish occasionally to mix it up. Aside from eating better and improved liver levels he is MUCH MUCH better. Still sleeps a lot but he generally has MUCH more energy and is so much more alert. Probably not a stretch to say Volhard saved Grady's life and can absolutely say NDF2 improved and extended his life. Great product and expert advice!

    Natural Diet Foundation

Started using this product for our puppy early on at the recommendation of our puppy preschool dog trainer. We have been very pleased with the results; healthy skin/coat, healthy teeth and the nice, natural steady growth of our puppy. There are so many options for puppy food/dog food it can be overwhelming and hard to know what to choose. I like the convenience of this base and the ability to add the protein of my choice or our puppy’s preference. It is simple and convenient with no required monthly commitment. I feel really glad we can give our pup a high quality natural diet. It can seem expensive compared to a bag of dry kibble but I think of it is an investment in long term health and preventative care.

My 11 month old small breed dog devours his meals! I was having trouble transitioning him from puppy food to all stage kibble. He was very picky and I wasted time and money until a friend recommeneded Volhard. Exceptional product.

Absolutely the best thing I have done for my dogs was to transition them on to this product. Less tear stains, increased vitality, smaller firm stools, have been experienced by all three dogs.

    Review from a DVM

Posted by Dr Amy N. on Oct 29th 2020

Over 20 years ago, I purchased and read Wendy Volhard's book. At the time, I was seeking answers for why my beloved collies were dying so young from cancer. I wondered could I change this? Wendy's book was my first introduction to "real food nutrition." I was impressed with the results she had with her Newfies and longevity. I incorporated some of her diet into my plan and tried raw for awhile, but did not follow the exact Volhard diet plan. Flash forward to today. I have been feeding most of my dogs a commercial organic raw since 2011. I "discovered" Volhard was available commercially. PRIOR to ordering, I bombarded Jennifer at Volhard with lots of questions on safety, nutritional testing, etc. and was very pleased with her answers. So...I finally purchased NDF2. I am trying three dogs on the NDF2: two of my current raw fed dogs (one who is a super picky/poor eater and one who frequently gets diarrhea) and my mom's dog (who had been refusing her food and had been vomiting bile - first checked her bloodwork and PE- all was normal). The transition was seamless, dogs are doing great so far and like the food. I am excited to find a natural way to feed dogs which I can readily support. Volhard- if you haven't said it before, you can say it now "Veterinarian recommended."

After concerns that my dog was not eating enough and losing weight, I sought out another dog food. My finicky golden loved it. I have noticed a happier dog and weight gain in just 3 weeks! Love this product.
