Feeding Puppies

Puppies 7 weeks through teething are fed four times a day. If you have a 12-lb puppy, use the guideline for a 25-lb dog. Divide the breakfast into two meals, and feed one at 8 a.m. and the other at noon. Do the same for the evening meal following directions for a 25lb dog and divide the meal in half. Feed one at 4 p.m. and the other at 8 p.m. When the puppy is through teething, reduce feeding to three times a day. Around 6-7 months of age, reduce to two feedings, which will continue throughout the life of your pet following the above charts. Remember to gradually increase the amount you feed as your puppy grows. Dogs go through growth spurts up to 2 years of age and you may have to increase the amount fed for a short period of time.

Note

Dogs, just like people, have different metabolisms and activity levels. The amounts suggested are guidelines. For very active dogs the amounts can be increased, and for less active dogs decreased. Always have fresh water available.
